Let’s be honest.
We’ve been wondering sending this newsletter was really worth your time (and ours).
When a war is occurring, not far from us, we don’t really believe that our voice is the one that should be heard the most.
Which begs the question of why should you care about startups, when there are much more important topics vying for your attention at the moment.
As it happens, just last week, we spent some time with academics living just a few dozen kilometres from the Russian border, and a few hundreds away from the Ukrainian war front, who were asking themselves the same question, right when they were about to open a new startup program…
But here’s the rub, tech is not developed in a vacuum.
It is part of our social fabric, for the good and the bad.
Information technology equips us with a wealth of knowledge, and so that war is a knowledge war.
Technology tools let one apply force multipliers to their power, and so a few entrepreneurs can have an impact on millions.
Technology platforms give many the ability to gather within communities, and so we are able to coordinate our support with unprecedented speed.
There are countless examples of the way the tech industry has been rallying around Ukraine. We could not list them all.
We don’t know what shape this conflict will take.
What we do know is that this crisis will not be the last that we will see in the coming decades, or years.
It seems that one’s ability to improvise in a crisis is tied to the strength of existing infrastructure.
We have been taking some of those for granted.
So let’s learn to value them.
