Sales is vanity, profit is sanity, cash is reality.
Accounting is a somewhat tedious discipline, but it’s essential for building arguments and making real economic and financial reasoning.
And it’s not me saying this; it comes directly from none other than the highly regarded Etienne Krieger.
In his latest piece, he highlights that few people actually know how to read a company’s financial statements, despite it being a fundamental skill for managing a business.
This gap in financial literacy leads some managers to confuse revenue with cash flow, or to struggle with interpreting balance sheets and forecasts…. If that last sentence left you feeling a bit lost, I warmly invite you to delve into his analysis in this article.
In a nutshell, it’s not just about blindly pursuing sales targets; it’s about focusing on what will bring cash into your account the quickest, helping you build enough working capital to keep your business from hitting rock bottom.
“The purpose of a company should not be simply to make a profit.
It should enrich society and improve people’s quality of life.”
