'I am out of order until further notice…'
'You are receiving this automatic notification because I am out of the office. If I were in the office, you probably wouldn't get any reply at all.'
'I am away from the office this week. Unfortunately, I will be back next week.'
We've all felt the temptation to post a clever out-of-office message hop on a plane, and trade the incessant stream of work-related emails for a mai tai and a poolside lounger. But, realistically, how many of us actually do? Thanks to advances in connectivity, is there really such a thing as 'unavailable' anymore - or is the out-of-office as obsolete as the fax machine?
We're willing to bet that most of you have answered a call from your boss during a vacation, or logged onto the office account thinking 'I'll just have a quick look...' only to find yourself, several hours later, chasing Fanny from sales while friends, partners or children roll their eyes impatiently. There's a reason some countries have taken steps to safeguard employee vacation time, with France codifying 'the right to disconnect' into law in 2016. But, realistically, how many of us would be confident enough to claim this right; if we can post bikini selfies on Instagram, surely we can keep on top of our work, right? And, perhaps more worryingly, will we be judged as 'less dedicated' if we refuse to do so?
...all of which means that, unless your vacation takes you to outer space or the depths of the ocean, your out-of-office message might as well state the truth: 'I'm on vacation, which really only means I'm working from a different location, so please mind the time zones and try not to call my mobile at 3am, thanks. But if you do, I'll probably still pick up.
