What your soil says about you 👩🌾 🌳 🍎 🌽
Have you ever walked in a forest? Do you remember how the soil felt under your feet? Soft, lively, with an intense dark brown color. Well, you've been around a healthy soil: a soil that retains water, recycle nutrients and plays a key role in storing carbon. Earthworms, birds and insects are all around. Now, picture the soil of a crop in your mind. Do you see a bare field with a hardish, heavy and dusty ground? You are right, 60% of soil on earth is like that: degraded. A soil that faces erosion, floods, landslides, biodiversity loss and doesn’t act as a water purifier anymore.
How did we end up there? The conventional agriculture has treated the soil as a substrate, ploughing the soil regularly. It might have boosted production on the short run, but at the expense of the biological life that was enabled in the first place.
This is where regenerative agriculture comes into play. An approach that gathers farming practices that protect and regenerate the key resources of a farming system: soil, biodiversity and water. This holistic approach also takes into account the income and living conditions of farmers, linking the environment, social and economic dimensions of food production. A tricky challenge that Hectar aims to solve by experimenting regenerative methods on field.
But now, what if we step back and take a broader view, to reflect on how this regenerative and holistic approach could be applied to other fields, say - business? In this sense, a regenerative entrepreneur would make sure to run a business that aligns with the earth and human systems, switching from a sustainable “do less harm” to a regenerative “do more good” posture.
What would that mean for your, for our business?
We are going to experiment this approach on us, shall we take you on this journey?
